Unmanned ground vehicles (UGV's) are finding a place in military applications such as field transport support, weapon disposal or remote reconnaissance and weaponry while unmanned bomb disposal units are making their way in to almost every law enforcement agency across the world. Dedicated bus communication architectures have traditionally been used in military and aerospace applications which have resulted in heavy, proprietary and inflexible networked systems. Today, Ethernet networks are becoming a standard in both fixed and rotary winged air vehicles including commercial aircraft, jetfighters, helicopters and unmanned air vehicles.

Key applications driving Ethernet include a demand for real-time data, flight management systems (FMS's), flight control systems (FCS's) and an increased concern for flight safety, operational and maintenance costs. New aircraft platforms are being designed around an Ethernet communications backbone and old platforms are being upgraded to replace tradition bus communication architectures and upgraded from heavier copper to lighter weight fiber physical media.

Our media converters with switching capabilities help support the transition from low speed 10 megabits per second (Mbps) copper to fiber backbones with connections speeds of up to 10 gigabits per second (Gbps). Ground Vehicles

Next-generation military vehicles include jeeps, tactical vehicles, armored vehicles and tanks. Ethernet will be a key technology of the on-board network that will not only enhance the survivability of soldiers but enhance the survivability of these vehicles and assist in more intelligent combat, command, and reconnaissance missions.

From an “intelligence” point of view, these vehicles must also include next-generation C5I solutions that include: electronic monitoring of diagnostic equipment and system failures, the ability to link into current and future tactical data networks that support surveillance cameras, rear cameras, acoustic gunfire detection, remote control weapons, vehicle monitors, GPS receivers, vision enhancements, and tracking devices

Marine platforms now run the gamut of sizes and applications. Traditional ships and submarines are starting to upgrade shipboard system to Ethernet to enhance the control and management of in-ship communications, electrical, water cooling, air-conditioning, damage control, fuel, cargo loading, propulsion, auxiliary equipment, radar, sonar, radio guidance, emergency, warning, and weapons systems.

Modern Soldier

Modern soldiers now carry several devices to enhance both survivability and the effectiveness of the mission.  Communication between command and control and the soldiers is often a constant two-way stream of communication and exchange of data. The “digital” soldier is fully equipped with advanced weapon systems and communication systems such as tablet computers, navigation systems, battery packs, headsets, warning sensors, video visor for weapons, night vision glasses and many more items necessary for “modern” warfare. All of these devices have to communicate with each other by means of robust, reliable connection systems.

However, we are in a state of flux when it comes to standardization of physical network connections, power requirements and communication protocols that each of these devices may use.
